The Truth will set you free.
For a long time we were under the illusion that this is a Christian nation. There were nativity scenes in public places and real Christmas carols on the radio. Our stores had big Christmas sales. Our pastors got to pray meaningless prayers at public events in the name of Jesus. There were baccalaureate services that students slept through. All of these and more giving the impression of a strong vital Christianity. But it was an illusion. Underneath the society was as pagan then as it is now. It never embraced the Christ as Lord. It hardly knew Him except as the cute baby in the manger. We never struggled to bring the good news to the pagan society because we didn't know they needed it. All that has changed the illusion has been destroyed and the fact that society as a whole is anti-Christian comes as a surprise. We moan over the loss of the word Christmas in store advertisements. We cry because the schools have banned Christmas programs. We long for the days when the real nature of society was hidden. I say sing an Alleluia. We don't want to fight this society we want to bring the good news to the people who make it up. We don't want to put back the lie that allowed us to pretend there was no need to evangelize because this was a Christian nation. No , now we can see clearly the hand of God stripping away the things that blinded us to the truth. Now we are free to go back to being the people of God in a foreign land. We can begin to carry the fire into a cold and dreary world. Now that we know the truth let us act like the early church. Let us not surrender to the society and its values. Let us stand as the God's people against the society and its values. It will not be easy but now we are free to do it. Pray for the Church.

Hi Pastor. I've found your columns thought-provoking. I hope you'll keep them coming. I think you may have to pound on the keyboard a little harder, though, if you are going for diatribes.
Best wishes to you this Christmas season, and thank you for your service.

Hi John,
What a point of view. I've never given any thought to your subject matter. Very thought provoking to say the least.
May you, Betty, and your family have a most Blessed Christmas.
By the way, I received your little quiz via snail mail today. Since I'm a retired English teacher, I think that disqualifies me from answering. Every Friday I gave a spelllling quiz.
Amen! Preach it!
Pastor, I agree with the substance of what you have written, but there are some overtones that I'm having trouble coming to grips with.
My main difficulty is that you seem to be disrespecting the idea that we live within a culture or a society. You seem to be saying not simply that the Church is different from culture and superior to it. Not simply that many things about our culture are lamentable (or moreso than previously). Not simply that when the culture tries to mirror the Church, as with Christmas celebrations, it gets it wrong.
You seem to not like the fact that we live in a culture / society at all, as well as within the Church.
Did I misinterpret? Any thoughts about this?
